To follow this tour, start with the large blue grain
mill in the center of your screen.
The Mill Room is where the brewing process really
begins. If you look at the outside photo of the brewery at the start of
these tours, you will see a couple of large silos next to the brewery. This
is where the malted barley from those silos enters the building. Pale Malt
from the silos and Specialty Malt from the small hopper opposite the mill
are cracked in the mill. This exposes the starchy interior of the kernel
which will be converted into sugar later in the brewing process. The bags of
malted barley seen around the Mill Room are filled with various specialty
malts, including Crystal Malt, Chocolate Malt, and Black Malt. By adding
small amounts of darker roasted malts to the base of pale malt the brewer
controls the final color and much of the final flavor of the beer being
brewed. After the malt has been cracked, it heads into the Brewhouse, and so
will we. |
